Nice For Swimming & Snorkeling

St. Catherine’s Beach Bermuda is located on St. George’s Island, northeast of the town of St. George. This beach has soft, white sand and is shaped like a crescent moon. The water is clear and calm making this beach very nice for swimming and snorkeling. The beach is fairly popular with locals who enjoy fishing from the jetty. There are portable bathrooms at St. Catherine’s Beach. No lifeguards are on duty at this beach and no concessions are available.

Explore Fort St. Catherine

Fort St. Catherine provides a backdrop for the beach. The fort was built in 1612 to protect the Barbados colony. Originally built in wood, it has been rebuilt five times to strengthen it and include new features. Displays include replicas of the crown jewels, models depicting the fort’s evolution over the years, period weapons, and the history of forts in Bermuda. In the depths of the fort, one can see the soldiers’ sleeping area as well as mockups of the mess hall and kitchen. The views from the ramparts of Fort St. Catherine are spectacular. Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children from age five to 15. Children under five are free. The museum at Fort St. Catherine is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Other nearby attractions include historical sites such as the Unfinished Church, the Old Rectory, the Old State House, St. George Historical District, St. Peter’s Church, and the Stocks & Pillory and Ducking Stool. There is a golf course called St. George’s Golf Club just a third of a mile away from the beach. There are three nearby museums just over a half a mile away from the St. Catherine’s Beach Bermuda: St. George’s Historical Society Museum, the Bermuda Heritage Museum, and the Bermuda National Trust Museum. There is also an art gallery called Vera P. Card just over a half mile from St. Catherine’s Beach.

The closest restaurant is on the other side of Fort St. Catherine at Achilles Bay called The Beach House at Blackbeard’s. It is a medium priced restaurant serving dishes such as rack of lamb, seafood, and steak. It also has a nice wine selection. Other nearby restaurants within a mile of St. Catherine’s Beach include Buzz Tobacco Cay, The George & Dragon, White Horse Pub, Temptations, Tavern by the Sea, Polaris Restaurant, Wahoo’s Waterside Bistro and Patio, and Griffin’s Bistro. White Horse, Polaris, and Wahoo’s all serve Caribbean fare. Buzz Tobacco Cay and Temptations serve American dishes.

There are a few hotels in St. George’s Parish including Mid Ocean Club Cottages, St. George Club Bermuda Cottages, and Aunt Nea’s Inn. Mid Ocean Club Cottages offers cottages all with open patios or private balconies. It has a world-famous golf course.
